Our principal, Susan Phillips, will do anything to encourage the students at Chets Creek Elementary School to read, read, read! She allowed the students to duck tape her to a wall if they met their 1st 9-Week Reading Goal Challenge! We had over 95% of the students meet their goal and participate in this exciting event. We are so lucky to have such a devoted and dedicated principal. Stay tuned for what she might do for the 2nd 9-Week Reading Goal Challenge!

The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo

In The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo, twelve-year-old Rob Horton has recently moved with his father from Jacksonville to a seedy motel in Lister, Florida. Ever since his mother’s death, Rob has shut up his feelings in a big “suitcase” and clamped it down tight. He is determined that nothing will make him cry again – not the bullies who torment him at his new school, not the ugly rash on his legs, and especially not missing his mother, whom he is very skilled at not thinking about. But then two extraordinary things happen: Rob discovers a real-life tiger, pacing back and forth in a cage near the motel where he lives. On that same day, he meets Sistine Bailey, a feisty, independent-minded girl who lets out her feelings as readily as he holds his in. As Rob and Sistine learn to trust each other and, ultimately, to be friends, they prove that some things – like memories, and heartache, and tigers – can’t be locked up forever.

Perfect Man

Troy Wilson and Dean Griffiths have created the perfect children's book. Perfect Man is the "perfect" Read Aloud for our 5th Grade students. Our theme this year is Superheroes: Empowering the Future, and that is just what the main character, Mr. Clark, a superhero teacher does. Mr. Clark looks inside and sees the good inside people. He empowers his student, Michael Maxwell McAllum, to find the hero in himself, to find his super power. Mr. Clark helps Michael bring out the power to write. He tells him not only does he have to read and write, but he has to LIVE. He has to try new things, meet new people, and research along the way. Michael takes his advice, and he grew, and he wrote, and he lived. Michael Maxwell McAllum grows up to be a best-selling author, and Mr. Clark is his biggest fan.

SUPERHEROES EMPOWERING THE FUTURE!

We are challenging our students this year to stand up and be SUPERHEROES! We will be encouraging philanthropic behavior and actions. Our goal is to not have any villain behavior or bullying. This year, we will explore FICTIONAL SUPERHEROES and NONFICTIONAL SUPERHEROES and study their characteristics. Each day, our students and teachers will strive to be more like SUPERHEROES.
